Psychopsis papilio var. alba

This is the species that gives this genus the common name of "Butterfly Orchid". A sequential bloomer, with very attractive mottled leaves, the plant sends out tall flower stems that produce one bloom at a time at its tip.  Each bloom typically lasts about 3-4 weeks.  The next flower bud sometime forms immediately at the tip of the same flower spike, sometime not until several months later.  The same flower spike can go on blooming like this for SEVERAL YEARS (some say for as long as 10 years), so do not cut it off until it actually turns brown all the way down to the base.

Pictured is Psychopsis Mendenhall 'Hildos' FCC/AOS, an offspring of Psychopsis papilio and is very simiar looking to Psychopsis papilio. The alba color form of papilio is actually pale yellow with the lip being almost white, hence 'alba', and its leaves also lack the mottling pigmentation.
